A helping hand for the Dormouse.
Conservationalist
are installing plastic tubes in hedgrows around the UK to help re-establish
the dwindling numbers of dormice. The tubes provide ideal nesting
places and so far at least 10% of them show signs of this sleepy
animals occupation. They sleep for eight months of the year. The
rest of the time is searching for suitable habitat which has dwindled
alarmingly over the past 30 years (see veggieglobal wildlife files).
One of the most illusive and shy creatures of British wildlife,
this project, funded by English Nature, the People's Trust for Endangered
Species, and Center Parcs should help the stabilize dormouse decreasing
numbers , at least for the two years which this project will run
for.

Call for Lab Chimp Sanctuaries
In the US scientist
Jane Goodall is promoting legislation to create sanctuaries for
retired laboratory chimps. Federal research facilities now have
a surplus of chimps since the National Institute of Health overbred
chimps in the '80's when trying to find a cure for AIDS. So now
the chimps cannot be returned to the wild because they carry diseases
such as hepatitis and HIV.

Say...
This
may seem like a first step towards eliminating the need to use animals
in experimentation but we must put this in perspective since the
report also establishes the following words from Ms Goodall regarding
the fact that the bill would not arbitrarily pull the the chimps
out of research:"`Quite the contrary" she says,"
it enables creation of a more appropriate place for them to live
when the scientists have determined that they are no longer useful
for research.''
So
nothing more than a spit and polish to contrive public respect towards
a barbaric activity that should have ceased long ago. And particularly
in this era of computer enhanced scientific alternatives which are
now widely available for "simulated" experimentation.
