RARE
ANIMALS TRADE BAN UNDER THREAT
Over 150 countries
have gathered in Nairobi this month for the 11th Convention on the
International Trade in Endangered Species. Controversial proposals
by Norway, Cuba, Japan and South Africa are threatening scores of
species as they call for the reintroduction of trade in meat, shells
and ivory from animals such as minke and grey whales, hawksbill
turtles, elephants, pangolins and parrots. Several leading conservation
organizations are trying to block the proposal as they believe lifting
of such bans will lead to an upsurge in poaching. Results from the
convention on these issues will be expected at the end of this month.
LATEST:
(20th April) The Nairobi conference has rejected proposals to lift
global bans on the trade in whales and marine turtles, but it also
voted down efforts to protect basking sharks from hunters and traders.
ANIMAL
CRUELTY road rage incident...
A recent incident
of road rage led to a small family dog being thrown under the wheels
of passing traffic. Sara McBurnett, owner of the dog named ``Leo'',
said the attack occurred after a minor bumper incident in heavy
traffic in San Jose, California. The driver of the other car, stormed
back and began ranting at Ms.McBurnett. When she opened her window
to respond, he reached in, grabbed the small white dog by the collar,
and threw it into three lanes of oncoming traffic... killing the
dog.
Looking-Glass
Say... Now, it appears even defenseless
animals are the target of this particular breed of moronic human.
Most road rage victims, threatened by such psychotic behavior won't
report the incident in fear of reprise. A named system should be
set up allowing victims to pass on license numbers and incidental
information to the police anonymously. This collated information
would help build up a profile of the driver whereby, if a persistent
pattern emerges the authorities can survey these individuals and
act accordingly.
OIL
TANKER
disaster of French coast update....
FURTHER
oil spillage continues to pollute sea, coastline and destroy wildlife
in Europe's worst environmental coastal disaster. The oil tanker
which broke up and sank 70 km south of the French Brittany coast
last Christmas is still releasing patches of oil four
to five km (two to three miles) wide. The tanker Erika, chartered
by French oil giant TotalFina, spilled around half its 25,000-tonne
cargo of oil when it broke up in stormy seas. The resulting pollution
devastated 400 km (250 miles) of coastline and has so far killed
or maimed 300,000 sea birds.
Looking-Glass
say: International regulations to raise
standards in oil tanker build structures and their operations has
been long overlooked.
WORLD
ENVIRONMENT...floods continue
RECENT
floods in Mozambique again highlight the increase in mass flood
incidents world wide in the last 6 months. In Zimbabwe, Botswana
and surrounding areas the rivers Limpopo and Save have turned into
seas more than 100 miles wide. Tens of thousands of people have
been displaced from their homes... many have drowned and are still
dying from diseases propagated by the disaster.
In January 2000
at least 30,000 people died in floods and mud slides in the Northern
coastal region of Venezuela.
BIZARRE...
monthly oddities from around a mad planet
APPARENTLY
the Antichrist already walks the Earth in the guise of a vegetarian
philanthropist whose concern for human rights, the environment and
animal welfare is a cover up for his real aim... the destruction
of Christianity and "the death of God". So says Cardinal Giacomo
Biffi, the archbishop of Bologana and leading contender to succeed
the Pope...
ummm...
yes Mr Biffi... well I suppose you won't be inviting the Looking-Glass
team and other like minded associates round to the Vatican for a
slap up veggie-burger and fries, and an after meal chat about the
holocaust!
