8 2005 - Geldof Calls on G8 to help Africa...
Bob Geldof re-launched
his live-aid concerts in June 2005 to turn the world's focus squarely
on the G8 Summit being held in Scotland.
The series of concerts being held across the world this time are
called "Live 8" and Geldorf has called for the world's
richest nations that make up the G8 to make a 100% commitment to
stop all famine in third world countries, most notably Africa.
In the meantime the G8 members have agreed to completly write off
the multi-billion dollar debts owed by 18 of the world's poorest
countries. Under the agreement, the International Monetary Fund,
the World Bank, and the African Development Bank will write off
100% of the money owed to them by the countries - $40bn in total.
Hailed as a "victory, by Bob Geldof, he also added "Tomorrow,
280 million Africans will wake up for the first time in their lives
without owing you or me a penny".
