Baby
Chinese girls killed or trafficked...
The population
of China recently reached 1.3 billion.
China has a strict one child policy with baby girls being far less
popular, since families depend on sons for help in old age. This
has led to millions of baby girls being aborted or even killed after
birth and now China has far fewer girls than it should have with
a ratio of 117 boys to 100 girls.
Some parents abort baby girls until a boy is born. Chinese authorites
are making efforts to crack down on this practice by reinforcing
a ban on selective abortion. They have set a goal to balance the
sex ratio to normal levels by 2010. The government are at the same
time taking measures to stop child trafficking, as baby smuggling
gangs have sprung up all over China.
In 2003 about 250,000 women and children were victims of trafficking
in China, according to the United Nations Children's Fund.
