In
Brief...
Animal rescue groups in Greece are being falsely accused of trafficking
stray dogs and cats out of the country to make profit from fur and
vivisection. An incident at a Greek airport in March this year has
escalated into a nationwide scandal, based on a complete mistruth.
Greek rescue organisations say the misleading TV and newspaper reports
will jeopardize the lives of thousands of stray dogs and cats in
the run-up to and after the Olympics ...

POISONED
 |
 |
| Mass
poisoning of street animals takes place in Greece and the city
of Athens at least twice a year - up to three thousand dogs,
puppies , cats and kittens at a time. Greek and Athenean authorities
deny any connection with the killings. photos:

CHAINED
 |
 |
| Many
dogs in Mediteranean regions, as South American countries like
Brazil are chained their whole lives to act as barking deterents.
They are often undernourished and as the picture on the right
shows, they may outgrow their chains which cut deeply into their
necks. photos: GAR

HUNG
 |
Although
this appalling picture was taken in Greece, the hanging of dogs
and cats is not an unfamiliar site in Croatia as well.
Because of ancient Croatian ruling, any cat or dog seen more
than 300 meters beyond town limits is considered strayed and
therefore allowed to be killed. Animals hung from trees outside
towns are the result of such crazy laws. photo:

HAPPIER
ENDINGS

Feta, happy and well today.
These
are just a few of thousands of pictures and stories about
Greek Strays who are rescued by welfare groups and then adopted
by families across north west Europe.

This is
Feta (above), a deaf pup found in Keratsini, Greece.
Her sister and brother were dead close by, one without a head
(below).
Feta
was adopted through Stichting Hulp van Buitenlandse Honden.
Now she can ''hear'' with hand signs.

BUT
DON'T FORGET THOSE THAT SUFFER FOR ENTERTAINMENT
 |
 |
Every time you have a flutter on a race that uses animals you
are contributing to the continual barbaric treatment of them.
When past their racing prime, many Greyhounds are trafficked
to Spain where they run on second class tracks. Along with Galgos
used for coursing, they are kenneled in horrific conditions
and after their usefulness are ritually hung or tortured to
death.
France and some other European countries eat horse. Hypocritical
Britain abhors such culinary behaviour but exports its own horses
to Europe for meat consumption. And in 2004 a change in British
law relating to horse transport means it's now even even easier
to send Dobbin off to French meat markets. This neglected Greek
horse is one of many found by Greek
Animal Rescue.
