LGVN Animal News - Meat-like Alternatives

Dutch Scientists Create "Animal Free Real Meat"

A Dutch scientist has been growing huge quantities of real meat, produced from a small sample of cells taken from a single animal.

Samples of animal cells are cultivated on a matrix of collagen and muscle cells taken from unharmed animals. These cells then grow and multiply on the collagen. The inventor, Wiete Westerhof, from the University of Amsterdam, says that the product will have the taste of lean meat, but animals will not have to suffer. Pork, beef, chicken and all other kinds of animal and fish meats will be able to be created in large vats.

Looking-Glass says:
If this becomes commercially successful as a product, could vegetarians and animal rights campaigners finally see the end of factory farming and other terrible abuse of "live" animals for human consumption?
Moral ethics ... what moral ethics?
For the carnivorous mainstream who otherwise eat meat but turn a blind eye to the suffering caused to animals, this invention could be the dumbing-down answer - a switch to animal-free beef steaks without even noticing!
Science fiction and fact drawing ever closer.
In Star Trek, the crew's dinners seems to appear from thin air via food replicators in which atoms and matter are shuffled around to create "animal free" meat dishes and all kinds of exotic food and beverages.
Now that third millenium science is able to create animal-free meat ... what next?
