Living proof that the best gardener is nature itself, even high in the Alps.

A huge "Eden" type garden is growing around 4,500 feet up in the coldest area of the Austrian Alps. Defying all gardening and agricultural text book formalities, Sepp Holzer is showing how mother nature knows best. He has randomly planted a vast mixture of tropical plants and grasses on the slopes of his steep alpine pastures. The results have been an incredible array of crops, trees and plants, all which the "experts" would have said was impossible, particularly due to the poor soil and of course the annual average alpine temperature of 4 degrees celcius!
Holzer grows everything, from kiwi fruits to eucalyptus. And once planted he does nothing… just lets nature take its course… no pesticides, fertilizers and all naturally watered by rainfall. In winter, the temperature can fall to below minus 30 celcius with snow everywhere. But when left alone from man's interference, nature adapts - as this project has shown.

Looking-Glass comments: This site strongly believes in natural, free range gardening methods, and Holzer's extreme example shows how simple it can be. People with city gardens in most parts of the world could encourage an abundance of natural life from randomly planting flowers, trees and grasses. The flora and fauna will thrive…. if left alone! With environmental concern over food miles causing Co2 emissions, Holzer's experiment suggests that exotic fruit and veg may be "locally" grown.
