There are three versions of the restaurant NOVA Key - one with the coloured letters, one in plain black with red crosses and another in plain black with larger thin black crosses. However, with the black versions, the green bar below the "V" for vegan stays green, so still easy recognizable for vegans. The examples below give the three versions with different layout placement.

Remember, if the "V" letter doesn't have a green band below it then the dish is not suitable for vegans ... only vegetarians.

Some Fancy Starters

NOVA Key Restaurant Label Example
Honey Glazed Melon
Sun ripened melon drizzled with Eucalyptus and Acacia honey.
This example contains honey so it's not suitable for vegans. The O is crossed because the melon wasn't grown organically
Remember, if the V letter doesn't have a green band below it then the dish is not suitable for vegans ... only vegetarians.
NOVA Key Restaurant Label Example
Aubergine Autumn Dream
Smoked aubergine and on a bed of spinach with garlic olive oil topped with roasted pinenuts and shaved wild forest truffle.
This example is suitable for everyone (without food allergies).
NOVA Key Restaurant Label Example
Asparagus Soup
Asparagus creamed with coconut and a touch of lemon grass
This example contains chicken stock even though all the ingredients are organic (organically fed chickens).

Main courses

NOVA Key Restaurant Label Example
Satay Tofu Surprise
Tofu pieces in a satay sauce tossed with vegetables and served with wild rice.

The "N" is crossed because the soybeans used to make the tofu are genetically modified. The "O" isn't crossed because the GM soybeans were grown without pesticides. (now there's an interesting and frighteningly contentious catch!)

NOVA Key Restaurant Label Example
Chicken and Chips
Organic chicken from a local farm with French fries.

The chicken is organic and this is mentioned in the description, but the potatoes aren't organic, therefore the "O" is red-crossed.

NOVA Key Restaurant Label Example
Cauliflower Cheese
Cauliflower with four types of vegetarian cheeses topped with paprika and chopped chives
All the ingredients are organic but because of the cheese not suitable for vegans.

And for Desert

Gooseberry Tart with Elderflower
Wholemeal tart crammed with fresh gooseberries and topped with walnuts with a splash of elderflower and lime.

Suitable for everyone (without allergies)

Ice Cream with fudge and fruity bits
Topped with whipped cream.

GM soy ingredients, colouring from crushed insects, contains geletine and additives recently tested on animals.

Cheese Cake with Raspberry sauce
Fresh and home-made with locally sourced ingredients.
Suitable for all except vegans (and anyone with allergies.)

NOTE: Allergy information should always be included on menus along with a NOVA Key.

What You Can Do In Your Own Time To Help

UNITED KINGDOM and IRELAND site visitors

Due to the current state of labelling practices in the UK, it's worth keeping a vigilant eye open for products with "V" or "O" style labels on them. And if you have doubts about a product's authenticity as being totally meat free or organic etc, then contact the stores management or the producers themselves. Tell us about it as we will keep this site updated with your reports.
