Most
UK/Europe DVD players are now MULTI-REGION COMPATIBLE. That means they
will also play discs originally coded for countries within a specific
region. But check with your retail outlet to make sure you are buying
the latest multi-region player. If your machine is multi-region compatible
then you can safely buy from the wide range of American release Region
ONE DVDs through the Looking-Glass association with Amazon.com.
Most
UK/Europe multi region compatible DVD players can play Region ONE DVD
discs. This is because they support both PAL and NTSC video.
The
UK and Europe (except France) use a TV system called PAL. The USA use
a different TV system called NTSC, therefore multi-region compatible
DVD players in the USA might not play back Region TWO PAL DVDs from
Europe and the UK etc. A US DVD player might not support PAL video,
so US consumers should check NTSC / PAL compatibility before buying.
There is also an issue with playing back NTSC discs on a PAL TV. Most
newer UK TVs support NTSC playback. If it doesn't, the picture of an
NTSC disc will playback in black and white. So make sure your TV is
NTSC compatible. Likewise, in the USA an NTSC television may not be
able to playback a PAL DVD correctly so check your TV's specifications.
Regions
3,4,5,6 cover specific countries around the rest of the world. As compatibility
issues are still going through changes in some of these areas, viewers
should consult their retailers for advice on DVD disc compatibility.

Questions
and Answers
Q.
Can
I buy Region ONE and Region TWO
DVD movies through Looking-Glass?
Answer.
Yes...
Through Looking-Glass you can purchase both Region ONE and Region
TWO DVDs. This is to provide you with the maximum choice. At the moment
our USA Amazon association provides you with a huge selection of DVDs.
You will find DVD releases which are only available in the UK and vice
versa when browsing the USA lists. In the USA lists you may find movies
on DVD, which are only just being released in the UK cinemas. The USA
DVDs are a lot cheaper but we recommend that you buy a selection all
in one go, saving you extra money on shipping costs. (Delivery from
USA is also very quick)
Q.
Is
there any point buying a stand alone DVD player / recorder when I already
have a DVD drive on my computer?
Answer.
Why
would you want to cram round your computer monitor to watch high quality
wide screen dolby digital DVD films? ....Now is the best and
most affordable time to pick up a stand alone DVD player to hook up
to your lounge TV (and hi-fi). There are players on the UK market from
as little as £25 which also play back Region 1 DVDs... Region
1 is the format of USA DVDs. They either come already set up for playing
multi region DVDs or it's a simple task of tapping in a release code
on the remote control, then a massive selection of world-wide films
become available.
It's now an affordable time to buy a recordable DVD player as prices
continue to plummet. Most households have two TVs but most only need
one recording unit. So your old non-recordable DVD player still has
its use as a playback machine in your bedroom etc.
Q.
Can
I play audio CDs and MP3 CDs on a DVD player and will the current players
be able to play back the new
"DVD
Audio" discs when they become available?
Answer.
All DVD players play back standard audio CDs...
some even better than basic CD players.
All new DVD players play back MP3s and many other file types.
Look on the specifications to see the list and try and choose a player
/ recorder that plays back Mpeg 4 also. With DVD players you also have
the bonus of digital surround output for audio CDs. The first wave of
DVD Audio discs are at this moment being released. This will require
a new type of player that will play high sample rate multi surround
audio CDs as well as standard video DVDs. There are still format battles
going on between different companies as to which audio standard will
be finally adopted, but it is expected that all new players in the future
will eventually be able to support all formats of audio and
visual DVDs. As we said, there isn't any point waiting for these future
developments because the ultimate unit which records and plays back
all the different standards is a long way off, and will be very
expensive.
