The Shell Grotto
Grotto Hill, Margate,
Kent CT9 2BU

The walls and roof are covered in elaborate shell decoration in complex patterns. It is not known who constructed it and why he did it. As no real explanation exists, many bizarre stories about this cave have been created over the years.
The guide book tells that it is more than 1000 years old, and of Phoenician origin. The story goes that no-one could have shipped this number of shells in and removed the excavated chalk without someone seeing or knowing about the work. Which suggests the grotto is ancient. The feel and appearance of the decoration though is in my opinion 18th century. Almost all designs show emblems of India, Egypt and the East, it is surely much younger.

Pip’s Graves
St. James’ Church, Cooling, Kent.

Lost in the North Kent Marshes. Here is the greveyard which inspired the opening pages from Charles Dickens’, Great Expectations. In the graveyard are the tiny grave sarcophagi of the children from one family. Dickens makes these Pip’s deceased brother and sisters and here he is cornered by the convict Able Magwitch, escaped from the prison hulks across the marsh. These were a reality also.
The walls of the Vestry in the church (St. James) are decorated with thousands of cockle shells. The symbol of St. James being the shell, as in San Diego de la Campostella.
