Dead Like Me
Finally, a TV series that was set to cheer
up the millions who had still been suffering cold-turkey since
the end of "Buffy The Vampire Slayer".
"Dead Like Me" oozes subtle deadpan humour, great character
profiles and a consistently strong script.
With flavours of "Buffy", "Six Feet Under",
"Donnie Darko" and even elements of modern British comedy
thrown in for good measure, this truly unusual series has it all.
The lead character 'George' is played by the gifted Ellen Muth,
who as well as projecting a rather extraordinarily offbeat acting
talent is also a member of Mensa. In fact, Muth's father has an
entire museum named after him.
Supported by a music score courtesy of Stewart Copeland, "Dead
Like Me" is destined to become a high-pedigree cult classic...
HOWEVER ... Showtime, the TV network who produced Dead Like Me,
cancelled it in early 2005 after only its second series leaving
a growing base of fans on the edge of their seat in anticipation
for season three's revelations. Showtime have completely misjudged
a global audience trend by axing a show that, through word of
mouth, continues to grow into a world-wide cult TV phenomena.
To give just one example of the many thousands of comments about
Dead Like Me, here's an extract from a well-worded comment by
"phil-525" via IMDB: "The chemistry of characters
with this cast is more than exceptional. The ability to give such
realism to such an absurd story premise is bewildering and you
find yourself taken for a ride down this fairytale as if it were
real life. This is perhaps the best program that no one has ever
heard of yet and I wouldn't be surprised if it rose to one of
the best series of this decade when the show becomes better known
to the public."

'Dead Like Me' Cancellation")

Little Britain
You might roll your eyes up at the
next person who quotes yet another catch phrase from Little Britain,
but there is no doubt that this UK comedy series has already parred
in cult popularity with Monty Python ... and may have continued
to do so until the third series began to fall flat and viewing
numbers declined rapidly. However there is something daft but
adorabe about most of the characters in this bizzare offering
written by Matt Lucas and David Walliams - even though some of
the sketches are truly revolting and quite unwatchable.... But
we still love it and the Little Britain bug has spread world-wide.
In fact, it's one of those Brit TV series' that the Americans
will love in all its "whacky quaintness"
... erm, yes ... absolutely; because it still baffles much of
the rest of the planet as to why the Americans found Benny Hill
so darned funny.

Sports Night
A
lost gem from 1998 by the makers of "West Wing", and
so you'll find the style of the three-time Emmy Award winning
'Sports Night' strikingly similar.
Don't let the subject matter
of "sports" put you off - After 5 minutes it soon becomes
superfluous as this ingenious series carries you along by its
slick pacing, smart humour and pin-sharp dialogue, thanks to a
superb
script and well-chosen
cast (many who went on to do West Wing).
One only irritation is the displaced canned laughter that infects
the soundtrack of the first series. Apart from that this DVD set
of all 45 episodes from both series is worth every penny. You'll
watch Sports Night over and over and forever wonder why it was
never a major network release at the time.

The
Mighty Boosh
"I've got a bad feeling about
this" ...
Surreal and highly original
UK TV comedy that grows on you the more you watch. Ironically
trashy college humour, injected with a vibrantly coloured visual
ambience thanks to clever, simple fun use of imaginative props
and cheesy post-production effects.
Mighty Boosh gets better as the series progress. If you are truly
tired of the never-ending stream of dire towny-trendy UK adult-comedy
series made by dire towny-trendy TV people then this refreshing
offering from BBC 3 is worth exploring.

David Attenborough's "Life" documentary collections
Probably the finest set of natural
world documentaries the BBC have ever produced. Highly absorbing,
filmed in extraordinary detail and hosted by the eloquent David
Attenborough. Series such as "Trials of Life", "Life
in the Freezer", "Life of Birds", "Life on
Earth", "The Living Planet" and "The Private
Life of Plants" can be found either as box set collections
or as single seriies sets. You'll also find "The Life of
Mammals". Much of the footage shot for this series had never
been seen before, and is presented with the respect and reverence
for the natural world that Attenborough has made his trademark.
There's also "The Blue Planet". An
epic, eight-part series that took five years to complete, The
Blue Planet firmly re-establishes the BBC as the world's pre-eminent
producer of top quality nature documentaries. Exploring every
aspect of marine ecosystems, from coastal marshes to deep-sea
trenches and from polar waters to tropical reefs, The Blue Planet
is thorough and informative, yet never less than thrilling.

Ray Mears
Ray Mears shows an enormous degree
of respect for the natural environment. His "Extreme Survival"
and "Bushcraft" series provide exemplary examples of
how humans are potentially able to live harmoniously and quite
happily within the fabric of nature itself - free from any artificial
aids and comforts.
Ray shows us common-sense techniques in utilizing natural surroundings,
usually equipped only with the most rudimentary, but essential
tools. Looking-Glass and VeggieGlobal consider the Ray Mears contribution
to television to be amongst the most important eco-educational
programmes ever to hit UK screens. Fortunately these are now available
on DVD and will provide you with years of fascinating viewing
and learning. Ray Mears subtlety educates as he explains with
genuine enthusiasm and passion, his instinctively inspired methods
of living with - and respecting nature. As he does so, he never
patronises the viewer. From an afternoon's exploration of your
local woods to a month's survival trek across a jungle these DVDs
will provide a lifetime's entertaining reference for you and your
family. (Double 5 Star)
