I am extremely concerned that the US doesn't really have ANY current system for labeling these categories in products. Makes it very hard for someone considering becoming a vegetarian!.

I hate having to go hungry for millions of things that dont say "Suitible for vegetarians" it's impossible to tell so I dont take the risk and go hungry.
Companys should realise it is important and maybe then they would have more product sales.

Lack of full and accurate labelling results in me (and no doubt many others) consequently buying a limited range of products. NOVA labelling would be beneficial for sales as well as for discerning consumers.

I find the current labelling very unclear and reading the ingrediant list on the labelling time consuming and a hassle. Even then with many additivies coming form many different sources (some veggie and some not) I can still be unsure if some products (espically chocolate) are in fact veggie. NOVA would help alot. A great idea.

I am very concerned about medicines many of which contain gelatine. If the supermarkets can label their own brand foods, why not their medicines?

As a veggie i am shocked that products of food, clothes etc. are not controlled in a stricter manner it isn't good enough and we demand more from our governments.

This Nova idea is so much more workable than independent organizations such as the Vegetarian Society's "v" label. Particularly since hundreds of manufacturers are now "v" labelling their own products willy-nilly, which makes the whole thing even more un-regulating. It's OK if vegetarian organizations endorse a product as well with their own "self-promotiong" labels, but "Nova" makes sense as a complete legislative labelling system. It has universal appeal, and covers all ethical aspects. Most of all it is a useful system for any consumer whether they are vegetarian or not. It will make them think more about what they are eating or wearing.

We have always had problems finding products that are properly 'vegetarian' In Malaysia it was a nightmare. Although there were large hindu communities many often had suspect nestle products in their vegetarian restaurants. Companies are ignoring the basic rights of consumers by the use of misleading labelling.

It's very hard for a person to try to become Vegetarian, especially when nothing is labelled. The companies label things very obscurely and, as was mentioned, the US doesn't really have a labelling system. I think many would appreciate the NOVA system greatly, especially now that many individuals are becoming more aware of their diet and what is or isn't in it.

All products should be clearly labelled, and a world wide standard should be established.

What You Can Do In Your Own Time To Help

UNITED KINGDOM and IRELAND site visitors

Due to the current state of labelling practices in the UK, it's worth keeping a vigilant eye open for products with "V" or "O" style labels on them. And if you have doubts about a product's authenticity as being totally meat free or organic etc, then contact the stores management or the producers themselves. Tell us about it as we will keep this site updated with your reports.
