This
year has caused so much distress to my 10y.o. lurcher. From
halloween until the 12th Nov, every night and afternoon, someone
let off bangers etc. It made Willow shake, continually pant,
and so terrified she'd be vomiting, It'd take until 3am for
her to calm down.

Intelligent
people party with respect for animals and the community. It’s
only morons who pollute the world with the unsociable and
threatening noise of explosives. This is the most well-balanced,
practical fireworks campaign I've ever come across. I love
your idea for bang free environmentally friendly “themed”
firework boxes, a brilliant middle-ground solution. Whoever
is responsible for Ban the Bang and the rest of Looking-Glass
should be running for government themselves! Intelligent,
common sense without self-righteousness shines through on
everything I've read here. A perfect plan of world harmony
for all of us fun but peace-loving people! You certainly have
my full support.

They
should be banned because it is now 1 week on and my 17 month
old border Collie still wont go out for a walk. He has only
just plucked up the courage to go out in to the garden at
night after all of the bangs. Goodness knows how long it will
take for him to be able to go out for a proper walk in the
evening!! That was even with him sitting under the stairs
with the tumble drier and music on!!

Star Comment - November 11th
2003
On the
way home and to work, I often see this lady and her black
guide dog. I had not seen the dog for a few weeks, and being
concerned ask her what happened. The dog had to be retired,
age 4 because the noise of the fireworks made it to excited
and unreliable.
I feel terrible for her and the dog. Why has this been allowed
to happen? Those dogs cost a fortune in time and money to
train, and people get so attached, then the public get selfish
and let crackers off day and night and this happens!!
I am sick of it!!

Fireworks
nowadays make our area souind like a war zone for about 2
MONTHS. It is impossible to keep pets in for so long and farm
animals and wildlife suffer for the sake of humans yet again.

The fireworks
seem much louder than they used to be and it goes on from
October right through to New Year. It's a nuisance now. Today
I washed my car of dust and bits of cardboard form rockets
and now more are going off tonight. My Grand Father says it
brings back memories of the bombing during WWII.

My horse
has been terrified this week by the loud fireworks that have
been going off, he has been sweated up on several occasions
through the stress which is not good for him during cold nights
my friends horse also damaged a ligament when he was in the
field we believe this happened when he was frightened by a
firework.

Our dog
is not a nervous animal, but this year has been dreadful.
He shakes when the loud bangs are heard and there were more
and longer nights this year. A friend saw rabbits frozen with
fear and a fox running up and down the garden, panting with
fear. Only organised events should be allowed to buy fireworks,
not the general public.

I think
the selling of fireworks in shops to the general public should
be banned, but organised firework displays are fine as long
as they are not harming the environment.

Star Comment - November 10th
2003
4 weeks
before 5.11, the explosions began. Anytime from 9am through
to 2am. All of my pets are terrified of them, bark causing
disturbance to us and neighbours.
I have personally been involved in the rescue of several terrified
animals, some involved with RTA's where they have bolted!
There is no need for these huge banging and screaming fireworks.
There are plenty of other options which don't cause these
problems.

AS read
in your article, the goverments proposals are daft. I have
just endured the 3rd night of fireworks outside with my dogs
cowering in their kennels.this society needs a total ban as
most young people are too iresponsible. It will take several
children too get killed before the goverment will do anything!

What Else Can You Do To Help?
A
firework code to help wild animals and birds.
During firework celebrations, only buy fireworks that don't pose
a threat to wildlife. I.e. nothing that bangs or screams and no
aerial fireworks like rockets or starbursts.
If you have lots of trees in your garden then it's not a good idea
to have any kind of aerial type fireworks. Birds are quietly roosting
in trees all around you at night. Just because you can't hear or
see them doesn't mean they don't exist after sunset!
Protecting
your own pets.
Never
allow your pet outside during firework celebrations. If you have
animals in hutches outside and can't move them indoors, then cover
the hutches with heavy blankets. This will help reduce the noise
and the animal should also remain undisturbed by flashing lights.
Keep cats and dogs indoors, close windows and blinds and create
an audible diversion for them, like turning on some music - this
should be reasonably loud but soothing sounds to try and divert
the animal's attention from the outside).
If available in your country, get your cat or dog microchipped.
As we have already mentioned many cats and dogs run away from home
in a panic when there are fireworks around and tend to get lost.
With a microchip implant it's far easier to reunite an animal with
its owner.
Wild
animals and birds that are shocked or injured.
Keep an eye out for animals and birds in shock that
may have fallen from trees. In most cases human intervention will
add to the animals distress and we recommend you keep a watchful
distance from the animal / bird and make sure no one else goes near
it. If the animal continues to behave in a shocked state for more
than three or four hours or
is clearly injured then you should alert your local animal welfare
organization as soon as possible. They will send someone to investigate
further.
Important Note: Tell your local animal welfare organisation to link
up free with The
Lost and Found Animals Network (LaFAN).
If an animal is lost through fright during firework activities,
LaFAN provides a simple method for the public to track down a rescue
place in the vicinity of their lost animal. The LaFAN website address
is http://www.looking-glass.co.uk/lafan
Keep
a check on the elderly and young children.
The
elderly are particularly susceptible to loud disturbances. They
often live alone and have pets which can become nervous and agitated
by the noises. It's a good idea to check on elderly neighbours if
you think they or their pets may be suffering during firework periods.
Very young children also need comforting at night during loud firework
activity as they often wake up frightened by the bangs outside.
If you are
aware of any incidents involving the suffering of any animals through
the use of fireworks then please use our
contact
page
