I think
that the sale of fireowrks is disgusting. I admit I used to
have small ground fireworks in my garden, they look good and
are kind of fun, but not the rediculous ones I heard going
off near my house last night. They go up into the air and
explode. They are legal weapsons of mass destructions... bombs
available to buy. It needs stopping now, my cat was scared
stiff.

I would
like to see fireworks banned from sale to public. Organised
dispalys are much more friendly to all. Fireworks are noise
pollution of the worste kind.

Star Comment - November 8th 2003
As I
suffer from tinnitus loud bangs aggravate it.
There is also risk of fire and injury from firework missiles.
Sales of explosive materials to absolutely anyone should be
disconued and only be done under license.
Fireworks contravene Health and Safety Executive rulings in
Britain. An acquantance of mine was blinded in one eye due
to fireworks.
Yob culture is using fireworks to cause distress to the elderly.
Fireworks are let off well before and well after bonfire night,
so that a continuous nightly disturbance ensues for about
4 weeks. Fireworks are let off at unreasonable times in the
night, sometimes at 2 in the morning!
Fireworks cause atmospheric pollution, if it were a trading
company causing it, they would be sued.
Ban fireworks altogether they are nothing but a nuisance to
humans and animals.

The British
Goverment should now ban the sale of fireworks to the general
public. Fireworks should only be sold to lienced organised
event's / companys. Fireworks cause to much damage and distress
to both animals and the public.

Star Comment - November 8th 2003
I look
at it this way.
If
fireworks had only been invented this year and you had gangs
of youths roaming the streets with them it would be tolerated
for about 10 seconds and legislation against them would be
almost immediate ... so why do we have to put up with it now!

I have
two dogs that in normal circumstancies are well behaved and
a pleasure to own and be with. During October and November
each year their behavoir changes. They are agressive towards
each other, because the loud bangs frighten them and reduce
them to the type of dog that I dont like and find difficult
to trust with other people.
If they were to harm anyone during this time they would be
put down for what is a stupid, human glorification of an act
of terrorism. This is only a small part of the agonies that
we inflict upon the creatures of this world that have and
will save so many lives, but in our madness most human beings
forget that.

My 18
month old border collie is terrified sensless every night.
He is too frightened to go outside, even for the toilet. Fireworks
have been going off every night for weeks and he is has gone
from a playful, outgoing puppy to a withdrawn nervous wreck.
The slightest noise now terrifies him.

I have
heard of several incidents involving pets one was the death
of a dog knocked down on road when it bolted after a thrown
firework scared it on news and a cat being frightened from
home (even before 5th Nov). My dog is reduced to a shivering
wreck night after night. Surely this is infringement of Human
and Animal Rights. Noisy Fireworks should be illegal except
for use by organisations on Nov 5th only.

There
was a firework display last night 500 yards from my horse
field. All three of my horses were terrified, galloping around
and sweating. And for what, to listern to loud bangs and flashing
lights, what enjoyment is there in that. Ban the Bang.

What Else Can You Do To Help?
A
firework code to help wild animals and birds.
During firework celebrations, only buy fireworks that don't pose
a threat to wildlife. I.e. nothing that bangs or screams and no
aerial fireworks like rockets or starbursts.
If you have lots of trees in your garden then it's not a good idea
to have any kind of aerial type fireworks. Birds are quietly roosting
in trees all around you at night. Just because you can't hear or
see them doesn't mean they don't exist after sunset!
Protecting
your own pets.
Never
allow your pet outside during firework celebrations. If you have
animals in hutches outside and can't move them indoors, then cover
the hutches with heavy blankets. This will help reduce the noise
and the animal should also remain undisturbed by flashing lights.
Keep cats and dogs indoors, close windows and blinds and create
an audible diversion for them, like turning on some music - this
should be reasonably loud but soothing sounds to try and divert
the animal's attention from the outside).
If available in your country, get your cat or dog microchipped.
As we have already mentioned many cats and dogs run away from home
in a panic when there are fireworks around and tend to get lost.
With a microchip implant it's far easier to reunite an animal with
its owner.
Wild
animals and birds that are shocked or injured.
Keep an eye out for animals and birds in shock that
may have fallen from trees. In most cases human intervention will
add to the animals distress and we recommend you keep a watchful
distance from the animal / bird and make sure no one else goes near
it. If the animal continues to behave in a shocked state for more
than three or four hours or
is clearly injured then you should alert your local animal welfare
organization as soon as possible. They will send someone to investigate
further.
Important Note: Tell your local animal welfare organisation to link
up free with The
Lost and Found Animals Network (LaFAN).
If an animal is lost through fright during firework activities,
LaFAN provides a simple method for the public to track down a rescue
place in the vicinity of their lost animal. The LaFAN website address
is http://www.looking-glass.co.uk/lafan
Keep
a check on the elderly and young children.
The
elderly are particularly susceptible to loud disturbances. They
often live alone and have pets which can become nervous and agitated
by the noises. It's a good idea to check on elderly neighbours if
you think they or their pets may be suffering during firework periods.
Very young children also need comforting at night during loud firework
activity as they often wake up frightened by the bangs outside.
If you are
aware of any incidents involving the suffering of any animals through
the use of fireworks then please use our
contact
page
