The
majority of misuse of fireworks is down to under 18's. They
are getting hold of them, despite the law. We want public
displays only and family fireworks to be either on Nov 5th,
or a day either side. We are not killjoys. We, our pets and
wildlife have the right to safety from socially irresponsibly
juveniles and adults.

Manufacturers
have been cynically increasing the power of loud fireworks to dangerous
volume levels - this has a serious deliterious effect on the nervous
sysytem of humans and particularly animals.
Loud bangers are now being sold which are not for entertainment
but for the purpose of civil nuisance, disorder and intimidation.

How
on earth the current abuse of fireworks has been allowed to
continue for so long is beyond me. It makes a mockery of every
environmental concern to date. The thundering bangs, the free
availability of such lethal explosives, the lack of licensing..the
pollution issues...It's just endless! We suffer so much in
Leicester due to Diwalli celebrations as well.
The import of sub-standard fireworks further adds to the misery!!!!
There is so much that could be done to restrict the nuisance.
Obviously too profitable to care!!!! We can't turn off our
hearing..It's time to ban or radically restrict this madness!.

Utter
selfishness causes utter misery to wildlife, farm animals,
pets and most human beings. Babies are often absolutely terrified:
what an introduction to the world for the very young. I'm
in favour of a total ban. There are other ways of finding
enjoyment than inflicting pain.

I
own a boarding kennels, in Saltdean, Brighton, UK. The people
living in a house 300yds away have been letting of fireworks
for over 5 hrs. Amongst these three have started falling towards
the kennels before they exploded and shook the buildings.
There is a dairy herd of 200 or so milking cows next door
to us.
I feel the people are not ignorant but simply do not care,
and the laws should be changed to control this type of person.

Today
is November 1st 2003 and the whole evening has been puncuated
by explosions. Our dogs have already been upset by a week
of sporadic bangs - and we have yet to reach November 5th!
I have nothing against fireworks - just the explosions which
I am sure exceed the illegal decibel rating for other activities
- motor vehicles, home stereos etc, etc. Bring on the Ban!

I
feel it is disgraceful that anybody is aloud to buy fireworks
and set them off on any night.
We have 2 dogs which get extremely distressed by them so for
the months of oct nov and dec, our dogs cannot go a walk at
night and have to be given tablets to calm them down. It would
not be so bad if it was just one night but its not!.

I
am not an old grumpy pensioner but only 33. For the past few
weeks, every evening all I here are fireworks.
After the 5th it will go on for another few weeks. My dog
is terrified and cowers under my bed. Surly the public sale
of fireworks should be banned and there should just be public
displays. Or just sell the fireworks on one day only the 5th.

Star Comment - November 1st 2003
My dog
dislikes and fears fireworks intensely. He appears, on the
one hand, to be trying to defend us from the bangs and on
the other, to try to hide from the noise. This of course leaves
him in a no win situation.
It wouldnt be so bad if the wretched things were let off on
a predetermined date. That way we could maybe escape to a
peaceful area for a few hours. But, as we all know, any excuse
is justifiable to let off these things.
As I sit here typing, it is very difficult to concentrate
through the noise.
Dont know what the occassion is this time but they are going
off all round the area. Its the day after halloween and Nov
5 is a way off yet. Nothing for it but to make a flask, brave
the cold and dark and find a quiet valley or cove somewhere.
At least we are fortunate enough to be able to do this.
My heart goes out to the poor souls that cant.

My sister's
dog was literally frightened to death last night, by a firework.
Cars, phone boxes, and post boxes have been blown up and destroyed
all across Liverpool. These things are lethal. We need to
ban sales to the public and heavily restrict their importation.

Star Comment - November 1st 2003
Our dog
is also terrified by the popular 'screeching' type of firework.
He tries hard to hide away in a corner of the room and it's
very difficult to get him to go out after dark. These noisy
fireworks must be banned at source.
Any legislation that relys on people to only use them for
a few weeks of the year is uninforcable.
I am sure the local Authorities or Police won't spend time
trying to find out where each bang came from, even if it was
likely that they could.!

What Else Can You Do To Help?
A
firework code to help wild animals and birds.
During firework celebrations, only buy fireworks that don't pose
a threat to wildlife. I.e. nothing that bangs or screams and no
aerial fireworks like rockets or starbursts.
If you have lots of trees in your garden then it's not a good idea
to have any kind of aerial type fireworks. Birds are quietly roosting
in trees all around you at night. Just because you can't hear or
see them doesn't mean they don't exist after sunset!
Protecting
your own pets.
Never
allow your pet outside during firework celebrations. If you have
animals in hutches outside and can't move them indoors, then cover
the hutches with heavy blankets. This will help reduce the noise
and the animal should also remain undisturbed by flashing lights.
Keep cats and dogs indoors, close windows and blinds and create
an audible diversion for them, like turning on some music - this
should be reasonably loud but soothing sounds to try and divert
the animal's attention from the outside).
If available in your country, get your cat or dog microchipped.
As we have already mentioned many cats and dogs run away from home
in a panic when there are fireworks around and tend to get lost.
With a microchip implant it's far easier to reunite an animal with
its owner.
Wild
animals and birds that are shocked or injured.
Keep an eye out for animals and birds in shock that
may have fallen from trees. In most cases human intervention will
add to the animals distress and we recommend you keep a watchful
distance from the animal / bird and make sure no one else goes near
it. If the animal continues to behave in a shocked state for more
than three or four hours or
is clearly injured then you should alert your local animal welfare
organization as soon as possible. They will send someone to investigate
further.
Important Note: Tell your local animal welfare organisation to link
up free with The
Lost and Found Animals Network (LaFAN).
If an animal is lost through fright during firework activities,
LaFAN provides a simple method for the public to track down a rescue
place in the vicinity of their lost animal. The LaFAN website address
is http://www.looking-glass.co.uk/lafan
Keep
a check on the elderly and young children.
The
elderly are particularly susceptible to loud disturbances. They
often live alone and have pets which can become nervous and agitated
by the noises. It's a good idea to check on elderly neighbours if
you think they or their pets may be suffering during firework periods.
Very young children also need comforting at night during loud firework
activity as they often wake up frightened by the bangs outside.
If you are
aware of any incidents involving the suffering of any animals through
the use of fireworks then please use our
contact
page
