Fireworks
have been 'going off' around here since the middle of September
and still hear them. I have four dogs and live in suburbs
of town.

Star Comment - November 11th
2002
Following
the last 10 days I would support a total ban on ALL use of private
fireworks. Apart from my concern for animals I have now witnessed
the total fear of my young nephew (3yrs old) when the fireworks
were going off outside his bedroom window, he was totally hysterical.

I
find it repugnant that grown people in particular seem to
get a buzz out of setting off loud fireworks at all times
of day or night without regard to the elderly/infirm and to
the animal kingdom at large. My own 2 dogs live in fear of
them and the government does not appear to be taking the matter
seriousley enough.

I
have four cats and a 20 month old baby girl, whose first sentence
was, "bang Mummy, don't like", while putting her hands over
her ears. The cats are terrified, and shake continuosly. We
have had fireworks banging all around us every night for the
last two weeks.

Star Comment - November 9th 2002
We
know this world is totally mad. So banning the use of fireworks
will be one small step towards alleviating much of the pain
and suffering inflicted on our wildlife. At the same time
it should also cut down on human casualties and give less
leeway for the morons who think it clever to use fireworks
to inflict pain and suffering on dumb animals.

It
is a disgrace that the public are allowed to purchase explosives
over the counter. Handguns are now heavily restricted. So
should explosives be which are potentially far more dangerous
in irresponsible hands.

If
selfish people would indeed stick to bonfire NIGHT instead
of turning it into bonfire MONTH then at least our pets would
stand a chance. How are we supposed to know WHEN to keep them
in when fireworks are gong off constantly. I HATE them with
a passion!

Don't
mind properly organised displays but feel that fireworks should
not be sold to the public. We don't sell other kinds of explosives
over the counter to the public, why should we sell fireworks?

others on the web about problems with fireworks, but nothing

Star Comment - November 9th 2002
Tonight
is the ninth of November and it is the ninth night in a row
that living in this area has been like living in the middle
of a giant firework display. My Border Collie is becoming
distressed each evening as it grows dark in anticipation of
another night of explosions. I am concerned about the effect
on wildlife hereabouts too, especially the birds as their
numbers are already diminishing alarmingly.

Other
than reducing my poor dog into a trembilng wreck hiding under
the sofa for the entire 2 weeks of 1st to the 14th of November,
(which is pretty ridiculous, I wouldnt have such a large problem
if it were just one day) Ive recently had fairly large problems
with my ears after going to an extremely loud gig, which did
significant damage that needed time to recover, I was doing
fairly well until november reared its head, until which point
my recovery has been completely reset. So this can not only
affects my pets, but also people with ear problems.

Looking
around my areas at all the people setting off fireworks, the
main culprits seem to be the uneducated 'lower classes'.
J.A, Scotland
Ban The Bang
replies:
We don't feel
class is the issue here. From yobs to snobs, our research shows
that the ignorance displayed through the use of fireworks crosses
all cultural distinctions ... There are different manners in how
fireworks are used, whether it's kids throwing bangers around housing
estates or Oxbridge professionals having a few of their four-wheel-drive
friends around for a Pimms and firework party, with massive explosives
costing £85 a pop - and shaking the entire neighbourhood in
the process.

Star Comment - November 6th 2002
Every
year my dog goes through hell for more than two weeks. The
noise is getting much worse. This year my dog had a stroke
on the Saturday before bonfire night. It's awful to see animals
in distress. The noise should only be confined to organised
displays ... or better still ban them altogether

July
2002 (pre launch correspondence)
I am
from an Australian animal group and we are currently trying
to ban fireworks as they can be sold and used by the public
in our state and cause many animals to be lost, killed and
injured ... Our territory is only one out of 2 territories
in Australia that permit fireworks to be sold to the public.
In all the states they are banned and have been for some time.
