Most
UK/Europe DVD players are now MULTI-REGION COMPATIBLE. That means
they will also play discs originally coded for countries within
a specific region. But check with your retail outlet to make sure
you are buying the latest multi-region player. If your machine
is multi-region compatible then you can safely buy from the wide
range of American release Region ONE DVDs through the Looking-Glass
association with Amazon.com.
Most
UK/Europe multi region compatible DVD players can play Region
ONE DVD discs. This is because they support both PAL and NTSC
video.
The
UK and Europe (except France) use a TV system called PAL. The
USA use a different TV system called NTSC, therefore multi-region
compatible DVD players in the USA might not play back Region TWO
PAL DVDs from Europe and the UK etc. A US DVD player might not
support PAL video, so US consumers should check NTSC / PAL compatibility
before buying. There is also an issue with playing back NTSC discs
on a PAL TV. Most newer UK TVs support NTSC playback. If it doesn't,
the picture of an NTSC disc will playback in black and white.
So make sure your TV is NTSC compatible. Likewise, in the USA
an NTSC television may not be able to playback a PAL DVD correctly
so check your TV's specifications.
Regions
3,4,5,6 cover specific countries around the rest of the world.
As compatibility issues are still going through changes in some
of these areas, viewers should consult their retailers for advice
on DVD disc compatibility. (see more below)
